Information on using illustrations from other publications in the thesis

Hereinafter general information on using images from other publications is given. Please note however that the process can create different individual cases. For this, we take no responsibility!

When using images from other publications in the thesis, the copyright must be respected strictly. If there is no other release to be obtained (for example, sometimes on Wikipedia) you must have the consent of the publisher. The publisher's pictures often have an author who has sold the rights to the publisher (with or without passing on of copies).

If illustrations are taken from the publisher's journals a link to "Rights & Permission" or similar is provided on the publisher's homepage. You will then be forwarded independently by the publisher onto the "Rightslink" portal of the Copyright Clearance Center:

http://www.copyright.com

Specifications on what type of publication, edition, etc. can be made there after the one-off creating an user account. At the end of this procedure the conditions / costs are calculated. To use the materials then you must acknowledge the license agreement and pay any charges. The user agreements however are differing from one publishing house to another.
You can test several options:
For the publication type "Dissertation / Thesis", for example the use in "print and electronic" is charge-free. But a license agreement is required (in some license agreements, a password protection of a pdf file is required and a certain wording for the citation is prescribed).

Concerning the use in books or the use for commercial purposes respectively, costs of 50 to several hundred Euros are incurred depending on the type of publication, publisher, edition, etc..
